Dan Thorn (also known as Dam) is a sim racer and occasional motorsports writer who drives for Kernowsport and, most infamously, The Indypendables. He was the first member of Realish Racing to buy hardware purely so he could compete in the club, something he has done on two separate occasions.

Dan was born to cockney parents and grew up in the mean fields of Cornwall. He enjoys brown ale, cheese and Lagavulin. He likes to sleep with only a pillow covering himself.

The Formative Years

Dan was interested in cars as soon as he knew what a car was. He had boxes and boxes full of matchbox cars which occupied most of his time. One of his favourite things to do with them was to push them down a 30ft section of spare drainpipe and see which one went the furthest once they came out the other end. Unfortunately as Dan entered his teenage years many of these toy cars met an undignified end at the hands of an air rifle.

Motoring Experience

Having lived in Cornwall (and therefore miles away from any kind of proper motorsport series) until he was 19, motorsport experience was frustratingly limited for Dan. He did however spend two years banger racing (though his age meant he was in the junior class, which was theoretically non-contact). Dan campaigned a 1.0 Mini City in his first season (2003) and a 1.3 Austin Metro in his second (2004), but with a class limit of 1600cc his cars were often outclassed, and success was limited. Nonetheless during this time Dan racked up 8 podiums, including 3 wins, and showed particular prowess when sliding around in extremely wet, muddy conditions. During this period he UDaoF'd three times. Dan was one of the favourites for the 2005 season after acquiring a Ford Fiesta XR2, but he withdrew from the series to concentrate on his studies. This didn't stop him from having some fun with the car however - on one occasion whilst demonstrating the incredible acceleration to his friends in his driveway, he crashed it into the gate.

While he never raced it, Dan also had an automatic Mini which served as a donor car to his racing Mini. Thankfully very little was needed from it, which allowed Dan to get up to all sorts of mischief in his driveway. When his parents were out he'd practice all manner of dangerous manoeuvres such as handbrake parking, J-Turns, and even reverse donuts. He even managed to find a rock which, when parked against, would allow Dan to use full throttle to do burnouts which generated an incredible amount of tyre smoke. Amazingly there were no crashes, but he did once reverse his Dad's Renault Kangoo into a wall, no doubt overwhelmed by the joy of Fernando Alonso's first Grand Prix win, which had happened just hours earlier.

He had his first driving lesson on the day he turned 17 and, just four months later, had passed his driving test. His first car was a 1.0 Citroen AX, which would barely do 80mph but handled so well that once it got up to speed it seldom had to be slowed down. After a couple of years he moved on to a 1.8 Alfa Romeo 156, and once owning it became too 'Alfa Romeo-ish', he bought a Toyota Celica 190 T-Sport, which he still has. His dream car is a Mk.II Ford Escort and he has a really uninteresting attraction to Porsche 911s.

Virtual Racing History

Dan's love affair with cars and motor racing has taken him through many different racing games over the years, though his online racing history doesn't extend much outside of this club. This is a short summary of his online career before Realish Racing.

Pre-Realish Racing

One of Dan's first online racing experiences came on Gran Turismo 5: Prologue. It was a short but successful career built on victory first time out, when he piloted a BMW 1 series to victory at the High Speed Ring.

Once the full version of the game came out, Dan was eager to utilise the online features. He regularly raced against DamonSmedley and RIISE in short, non-championship shuffle races, but Dan's big break came in the 2011 24 Laps du Mans, which he drove in front of a live audience including RRR boss Ajokay and now team mate TommyWTF1. Driving a Bentley Speed 8, Dan made excellent use of an early pit stop to get himself among the leaders. After RIISE retired from a huge lead at half distance, Dan became part of an intense four way battle for the lead with iamsa8, ed24f1 and MagnificentGeoffrey which lasted right up to the line. Dan eventually finished 4th, a result he repeated in the 2013 running of the race, this time at the wheel of Peugeot 905.

Dan campaigned an Alfa Romeo 155 2.5 V6 Ti in the Gran Turismo Touring Car Championship, his first online series, run by TheWilkesy88. Due to the calendar not having fixed times or dates for racing, Dan was often unable to attend, and only competed in 6 of the 20 races, scoring three podiums. He finished 11th in the championship, with 47 points.

Another notable Gran Turismo 5 moment was at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed. After some gentle persuasion from his friends, Dan entered a competition to win a track day at Silverstone. Consisting of two rounds, the idea was that the fastest time of the day would win. In round one eight people competed to set a lap time around the Trial Mountain Circuit in a Super GT Calsonic Skyline GTR (using a controller), with the fastest two times going through to the next round. Dan comprehensively won and went through to the second round, this time using a full steering wheel setup and driving a road going GTR around the same circuit. Despite protesting not being allowed to switch off the traction control or stability control, Dan set a lap which was four seconds quicker than any of the times posted so far. He remained at the top throughout the day, until late on that evening his time was just edged off the top spot. This surprising performance proved somewhat of a boost to Dan's ego.

Despite eagerly anticipating Codemasters' reboot of Formula 1 games, Dan was thoroughly disappointed by F1 2010, but even so was all geared up to compete in the inaugural Collantine Cup. Sadly work commitments forced him out of the series. Dan was invited to race in Season 2 of the Collantine Cup, but, now a well-established member of Realish Racing, he declined.

Realish Racing Career

- A more comprehensive account of Dan Thorn's Realish Racing career is available here: Dan Thorn - Racing History

Dan Thorn began his time in the club with Forza Motorsport. Despite being unfamiliar with the game he adapted reasonably quickly, taking a podium finish in his first season and pole position and fastest laps in his second. Despite several podium finishes and front running performances it wasn't until the end of MEMES - in his 100th race - that he finally took a victory. Whilst never really consistent enough to mount a full title challenge, he was 'best of the rest' behind the main title protagonists on a few occasions, finishing 3rd in MEMES, GTSSS, the 2013-14 GEARS season and the Miata Masters. He was also on course for 3rd in OSCAR before having to miss the final round for personal reasons, and had an outside shot at winning the Trofeo MiTo championship, eventually ending up 4th.

Alongside the Forza activities the club also dabbled with F1 2011. Dan tasted far less success here, not once finishing on the podium despite his very best efforts. A couple of 4th places were close but he never had the pace of the front runners to ever be a serious threat to the top positions.

Good results for Dan became more sporadic as the clubs time with Forza drew to a close, but with the switch to Gran Turismo 6 came a renewed enthusiasm. Through a combination of skill and experience he was able to take his first championship in Green Turismo, and followed it up with another in the Corvette Heritage Trophy. These were of particular satisfaction to Dan as The Indypendables also won the teams championship on both occasions. Satisfied with his achievements Dan started to take a more backseat approach to his racing on GT6, but still managed to take wins and a plethora of fastest laps in the remaining two seasons.

Whilst the console side of things was winding down, Dan was taking an active interest in the PC side of racing activities. Unfortunately Race 07 proved a far less happy hunting ground in terms of results, taking just one podium during the clubs entire time with the game, at the Really Rubbish Superprix. That isn't to say he didn't show good pace however - there were a few top six results, and one or two occasions where podiums (and potentially even a win) were let slip, usually through Dans own inability to drive consistently throughout a race.

Through a combination of his lack of skill at the game and the influx of talented new members, Dan had to cope with going from a regular winner to a perennial midfielder. With the addition of new hardware and the clubs move to Stock Car Extreme, he will be hoping to put a stop to his slide towards the back of the field and hopefully reverse the trend - even if it takes him another 400 races to get back to the front.

Never one to take his racing all too seriously, this was never more evident than during the fifth Merry Crashmas event, when he entered a Lawn Mower in all seven races, finished last in each one and become to first person in the club's history to finish a season or special event on minus points.

Driving Style

Dan built a reputation as a clean and fair racer during the unsanctioned GTTCC, a trait he then carried forwards when he became a fully fledged competitor in Realish Racing.

An exciting driver to watch, Dan has become known for his trademark lunging overtakes. If there's a gap he'll often try to fit inside it, but as he always commits fully to his overtakes they rarely end in significant contact. His lunges are not just restricted to the inside line, as in recent years he's begun to perfect the surprise lunge around the outside. Also in his lunging repertoire is the anti-lunge - a revolutionary tactic developed after years of practicing with team mate and fellow prolific lunger, TommyWTF1. This involves anticipating the overtake of a following driver, braking incredibly late down the inside and effectively performing a block pass on thin air. The other driver either has to back out of their overtake and deal with a slow-moving (or sideways) Cornishman on the apex, or attempt the lunge anyway but gain nothing as Dan is performing an identical maneuver in front of them. He also likes to try what he refers to as 'hero passes' - this is when Dan tries to perform a difficult overtake on a difficult part of the track, even when there is an easier option available. The combination of these unorthodox racing techniques can make Dan either an incredibly difficult or incredibly simple driver to overtake or defend from, depending on his form on any given day.

Outside of lunging, Dan enjoys racing cars which move around underneath him. He likes to steer the car using the throttle and often makes several adjustments during the corner, and is able to maintain forward momentum even when getting sideways. This was once referred to by other racers as 'Danning it'. This leads to a weakness in grippy, high-downforce cars which require a smoother technique, and his tyre wear is often significantly higher than that of other drivers as a result. In recent seasons Dan has also become known for his reaction times at the start, and he can often make up a few positions off of the start line. The start of races is a consistent weakness of Dans however - he is often quite cautious through the first few corners and can lose places. Worse than that, however, is that in large packs of cars Dan can sometimes lose awareness of where he is on the track...and where the braking zones are. This has led to some large, multi-car pile ups at the start of races. Thankfully, these instances are uncommon and are getting rarer, but it has been an underlying issue throughout his Realish Racing Career.
